Collegedale police remained on the lookout Friday evening for a 36-year-old man who led them on a high-speed chase through Southern Adventist University’s campus.

In a news release issued Friday afternoon, police identified the suspect as Jeremy Lee Logan, a white male from Cleveland, Tennessee.

The chase began a little before noon in the 9000 block of Old Lee Highway during an attempted traffic stop, according to Collegedale police. The driver allegedly drove through a gas station parking lot almost striking a Collegedale police officer’s vehicle, and the chase ended in the 3600 block of Camp Road, where the suspect fled by foot into the woods near the Deer Ridge neighborhood.

Police and sheriff’s deputies searched the woods to no avail, and the suspect remained at large as of Friday evening. They described Logan as a white male from Cleveland, Tennessee, in a news release issued by the CPD.

In an email to the Accent, CPD Assistant Chief Jamie Heath stated that there is no indication at this time that the suspect is armed.

“As always, we encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings at all times and to take precautionary measures while out and about,” he stated. “If you’re walking around campus, go with a buddy. Call or text someone, and let them know where you’re going or when you get there.  Share your location. Be proactive in ensuring your own safety.”

Heath said the chase lasted five to 10 minutes, and schools in the area – including Collegedale Academy Elementary – were placed on “soft” lockdown for about two and a half hours.

A video uploaded on Facebook by a bystander shows an SUV speeding through the center of Southern’s campus, crossing over the grass and walkway, followed by what appears to be a Collegedale police car.

“The suspect veered briefly off the roadway around the 4900 block of University Drive,” Heath wrote in the email to the Accent. “A sheriff’s deputy was the only other car that left the roadway and returned behind the fleeing vehicle. No one was hurt. I don’t know how fast the cars were going.”

Later, while searching the vehicle abandoned by the suspect, officers discovered that the vehicle belonged to the driver, but the license plate was apparently stolen, according to Heath.

“[ The suspect] is not in custody yet,” he added, “but we are in the process of getting warrants taken out on him tonight.”

Police intend to charge Logan with evading police, possession of stolen property, assault on a law enforcement officer, driving on a suspended license, vandalism and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the news release.

The CPD asks anyone with information about Logan’s whereabouts to call the CPD at 423-396-3133.
