Maddie Schmidt is the Opinion Editor for the Accent and is a Junior English/Professional Writing major. She enjoys reading, writing poetry and drawing in her free time. Her favorite part of writing for the Accent is the first moment of inspiration for a piece and finding meaning in the mundane. 

Service animals and emotional support animals provide vital medical, emotional and therapeutic support for students on campus. While governed by different laws and policies, both can significantly improve students’ independence, mental health and daily life when respected and properly understood.
