Earlier this morning, students received an email from President David Smith informing them of the passing of Accounting Freshman Zach Negrón, son of Vice President for Student Development Dennis Negrón.

“It is with incredible sadness that we notify the campus family about the death of Zach Negrón last evening,” the email read. “….We grieve this loss alongside Dennis; his mother, Jennifer; and sister, Marisa, a current student; and we ask the campus to join the administration in lifting them in prayer.”

Negrón was part of Southern’s Gym-Masters. His teammates expressed their condolences on the team’s Instagram account.

“Please keep the Negron family in your prayers,” the post said. “We received word this morning that one of our fellow team members, Zach Negron, passed away. Once a Gym-Master, always a Gym-Master.”

Details about the memorial service were not available at the publishing of this article. Students seeking counseling may reach out to Counseling Services or the Office of Ministry and Missions.

In his email, Smith provided words of comfort, quoting Biblical passages to encourage students.

“In this time of grief, we look forward to Jesus’ soon return and rely on the promises of God,” the email read in its closing. “‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’”
