Social vice president candidates Charlynneth Dizon, junior psychology major, and Priscille Mikala, sophomore music major, will advance to next week’s Student Association (SA) general election. Dizon and Mikala received the most votes in yesterday’s primary election, which allowed students to vote between three social vice president candidates and garnered a total of 776 votes.

Three students ran for social vice president: Dizon, Mikala and Jimin Kim, sophomore biology major. Dizon received 484 votes (62.37%), Mikala 171 (22.04%) and Kim 121 (15.59%), meaning Kim will not advance.

Primary elections are organized when more than two students run for the same position.

During yesterday’s election speeches, Dizon emphasized her platform’s focus on the mental, physical, social and spiritual aspects of event planning. She also mentioned ways in which she’d like to highlight the diversity on Southern’s campus, including a Welcome Back Party where students can enjoy activities from around the world and a banquet where students can experience different cultures.

“Don’t get deceived by this Filipino height,” Dizon said. “Because when the creative brain starts alight—my friends, get ready—engagements, involvements, creative unique activities that we can have here at Southern take flight, strengthening bonds and faith.”

During her speech, Mikala emphasized her platform’s focus on unity and engagement. She said she wishes to facilitate events that foster a sense of connection on campus, including a tropical luau-themed Welcome Back Party, ninja warrior course and jeopardy-style trivia event, among others.

“Together, let’s create a vibrant and inclusive community where every voice is heard and valued,” Mikala said. “Let’s work together to foster [and] celebrate diversity and create memorable experiences that will enrich our time here at Southern.”

Students will be able to vote between Dizon and Mikala in the SA general election next Thursday, held online between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. The general election will also allow students to vote for or against Alfredo Trevedan, a junior accounting major running unopposed for executive vice president, and between Bryson Baird, sophomore engineering major, and Edvan Benitez, senior theology major, for the president position.
