Southern Adventist University’s intramural program is back in full swing, with softball
kicking off the semester.
The intramural program was first introduced in 1955 and was run by the Student
Association (SA) at the time. Now, intramurals have become an integral part of the campus
community, with many students registering for various sports every year.
Featured sports include basketball, volleyball, soccer, futsal, flag football, tennis, indoor
hockey, kickball and more.
Emily Sosa, a junior nursing major who has been an EMT for Southern Intramurals for
almost two years, said having a minimum of seven players on each softball team makes the
softball season a fun way to meet new people and step out of her comfort zone.
Softball also gives students a chance to enjoy the outdoors while the weather is still
warm. With much of the school year bringing in colder temperatures, the fall season provides
students a chance to spend time outside while participating in a sport of their choice.
Relatives and community members also come to watch teams play. Whether they know
someone who is playing or they, themselves, used to play softball, onlookers find the games
enjoyable.
John Spence, a part-time Southern employee, has been coming to watch intramural games
for 24 years. Spence said he loves to see students who have never played softball try it out and
have fun while learning the sport.
He also likes to see the more competitive teams that are evenly matched push each other
to do better. Troy Walker, the director of Southern’s Intramurals program, said participating in
intramurals continues to be one of the best ways for students to get involved on campus.
“This year, students can expect a full lineup of leagues, tournaments and special events
that bring together hundreds of students from across campus,” he said.
